Achievement Unlocked: Mobility

Athletic Stretching - Your Mobility Hack

“We’re gonna science the shit out of this.” - Dr. Mark Watney, Fictitious Botanist

Athletic stretching is series of modalities- Assisted stretching, PNF, Contract-Relax, etc.- all aimed to do one thing. Reduce the tension in your muscles that is inhibiting your efficient movement.

They are scientifically-rooted modalities to help you unlock your best range of motion over time. Athletic Stretching allows you to activate targeted muscles while they are in an lengthened position in a way that is difficult or impossible to do alone. This activation helps release tension and soreness and increase range of motion.

Long-term results from regular PNF Stretching can be achieved, including restoration of more efficient movement patterns, reduction in pain an soreness caused by impingement and imbalances in the musculature, and create additional mobility and ease of movement.

The benefits of Athletic Stretching

  • Decreased Muscle Soreness, Tension and Pain

  • Increased Range of Motion

  • Increased Recovery Capacity

  • Increased Self-Awareness of Your Body

  • Increased Knowledge of Self-Care

  • Increased Depth of Stretch than Stretching alone

How is it done?

Every modality is different in some ways! Generally speaking, however, we work together to put a muscle into a stretched state. Usually, there’s some activation of that muscle, and a period of relaxation thereafter.

At the end of the session, we discuss what we found out about you, and give you some options that promote long-term mobility and strength for your lifestyle.

Where do you perform this?

I have a mobile massage table, so I can travel to you! Alternatively, you can also travel to me to get your stretch on!

Athletic Stretching Is NOT Massage

“I already see a massage therapist, so I think I’m good.”

Personally I love massage. The ability to have someone manipulate the tissues surrounding your muscles (call fascia) is an amazing experience, and one I would never discount. However, the purpose and practice of massage is different than Athletic Stretching, even if there are one or two similarities.

How Atheltic Stretching Differs from Massage

Athletics Stretching Does Not Use Manual Manipulation of Muscle Fascia:

Massage practioners use their bodies to manually force muscle fascia to let go of tension. As a result, a massage can result in surface bruising and soreness after the session due to the pressures involved as they press through your skin.

Athletic Stretching doesn't apply external pressure to the targeted muscluature, but instead uses leverage to invite your body to explore its natural, uninhibited range of motion. This eliminates the risk of bruising and skin soreness following a stretch session.

Athletic Stretching Uses Your Body’s Natural Responses Tension and Activation to Unlock Range of Motion:

Massage therapy does not normally include the exploration of the muscle within its range of motion. The natural response to applied pressure on a muscle is to contract the muscle to reduce damage. It is why a massage client has to actively attempt to relax when the practitioner finds a knot or spicy spot in deep tissue work.

In Athletic Stretching,  we actively explore your range of motion together and use your own body's natural responses to the extension of a muscle, called a stretch reflex,  to tell us where your where it should be.

Capitalizing on the stretch reflex with muscle activation, Athletic Stretching allows the body to gently explore its full potential, .

Athletic Stretching is an Active, Cooperative Experience:

Massage is something done to you.  In an Athletic Stretching session,  you’re an active participant in the maintenance of your body during the session - both through muscle recruitment and communication with your practitioner.

Athletic Stretching Does NOT Limit Your Activity for the Day:

Massage is intense on the body’s muscles and skin tissues! It’s a process most need to recover from with lots of hydration and relaxation. Massage is best done on a day where your have limited exercise, though it can be done after a workout to help increase recovery.

Like massage,  Athletic Stretching can be performed post-workout to enhance recovery. However, Athletic Stretching can also be done before most workouts!  In fact, Athletic Stretching is an excellent way to begin to unlock range of motion before adding stability and strength to an imbalanced muscle group and movement pattern.

Athletic Stretching Is an Amazing Tool for Improving Motion, Stability, and Control in Daily Activities and Exercise:

While massage is excellent for recovery, mental and physical wellness, Athletic Stretching can also help correct imbalances and impingement in the body that ultimately help unlock your true potential,  ease soreness and promote further pain-free activity.
